John 8:3-4 KJV
And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act.
The woman in this sin was trapped. First, she was trapped by a legal system that condemned her to death. Second, she was trapped in sin. This was likely not the first time she had committed adultery, but it was the time she got caught.
Sin had her returning to an action that was going to kill her. That is precisely Satan’s way. He is out there trying to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). He almost succeeded with this woman - had it not been for Jesus.
Jesus can untangle every rope of bondage that we put on ourselves. He can free us, give us hope, and a new life. He does exactly that for the woman.
After telling anyone without sin to cast the first stone, the crowd disappeared, leaving the woman and Jesus. Jesus says, “Neither do I condemn you, go and sin no more” (John 8:11).
Only Jesus can give you the power to get free. His Holy Spirit can guide our lives and give us the strength we need to overcome. We can’t do it on our own. When we try, we just make bigger messes for Jesus to clean up.
The change Jesus brings to our life is more than actions and outward appearances:
Ezekiel 36:26 KJV
A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.
When he gives you that heart change and new spirit, then, and only then, can we live a life of freedom.
