Psalm 42:1-2 KJV
As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. [2] My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?
These verses tell us that as a deer longs for water, the author’s soul longs for God. Anyone who has ever been out in the heat for a long period of time, especially while exerting themselves knows how desperately we crave water.
We need water to live. Our bodies can only go a few days without water, but how long can our souls go without God? The author says his soul craves the Lord, but how do we satisfy this craving?
Obviously people can live their entire life on Earth without knowing the Lord, but their soul is dead and decaying within them. In order to receive life for their soul, they must accept the true and living God:
John 7:38 KJV
He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
Accepting Jesus as our Lord and savior gives us living water for our soul. This water will never run out, the river shall never run dry! The only way the water stops flowing is if we dam up the river. We can close our hearts to God and block his access to us:
Revelation 3:20 KJV
Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
Even when we put Jesus outside of the door, He’s still there knocking, trying to get us to let Him back in. He desires a relationship with us. Do we desire Him?
