Proverbs 9:10-11 ESV
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight. For by me your days will be multiplied, and years will be added to your life.
Most people want to live a long life. They want to enjoy as much time as they can with their family and friends, doing the things they enjoy, but how do we attain a long life?
Scientific inquiry into those who live the longest has shown a healthy spiritual life is a strong component to longevity. Religious people tend to have lower risk of depression and a stronger social network. This makes sense if we know the word of God…
God said at the very beginning of His word that it was not good for man to be alone (Gen. 2:18). He also said He wants us in fellowship with others and engaging in our community (Heb. 10:25).
God wants these things for us because He knows what is best for us. That is why he gives us guidance that if we follow it, our lives will be improved in both quality and quantity:
1. Serve Him - He wants to give us abundant life on earth and eternal life with Him, but He only can if we accept Christ.
2. Serve others - We need other people to enjoy life to the fullest. The best way to build strong relationships is in service to one another.
3. Use wisdom - Make the choices that will benefit you and your family in the long term - not just the here and now.
There are many more pieces of guidance throughout the sum of scripture, but if we follow these 3 pieces, we will be on track for a long and prosperous life on Earth and a perfect eternity.
