Happenstance

Ruth 2:3 KJV
And she went, and came, and gleaned in the field after the reapers: and her hap was too light on a part of the field belonging unto Boaz, who was of the kindred of Elimelech.

This scripture tells us it was Ruth’s “hap” to come to Boaz’s field. Hap in this case could be equated with coincidence. She coincidentally happened to show up to the one field owned by a near relative of her late husband.

Scripture tells us this wasn’t a coincidence, but God’s direction:

Psalm 37:23 KJV
The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord : and he delighteth in his way.

Obviously, Ruth is not a man, but this scripture applies equally to women. Ruth’s steps were ordered by the Lord because she became a “good woman” in the previous chapter of our text:

Ruth 1:16 KJV
And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God:

When Ruth accepted Jehovah God as the one true God and abandoned the false worship she engaged in while growing up in Moab, the promises of God then applied to her as much as they did to her Israelite mother-in-law, Naomi. God directed her steps and her path. Through God’s direction, she walked into prosperity and blessing with Boaz.

The same can be true for us, if we keep God at the center of our lives:

In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
