When Darkness is All Around

Acts 27:29 KJV
Then fearing lest we should have fallen upon rocks, they cast four anchors out of the stern, and wished for the day.

When things in life go wrong, it can seem like we’re surrounded by the darkness. Darkness makes it difficult to see. It makes it hard to discern how close you are to both others and objects.

Paul had been in a storm for a fortnight. He and the crew were likely tired and many of the crew members were ready to give up. The darkness was keeping them from the visual of the shore and the hope that it would bring.

When Satan surrounds us with darkness and we can’t see what’s ahead of us, we have to hold onto scripture to maintain our hope. The Lord tells us that “weeping may endure for a night but joy comes in the morning” (Psalm 30:5).

If we are faithful to do what is right when we are in the darkness, as Paul did during the shipwreck (Acts 27:31), we will surely reach the shore at daybreak and be filled with the joy it brings:

And the rest, some on boards, and some on broken pieces of the ship. And so it came to pass, that they escaped all safe to land.
