Give Him Your Burdens

The books of Psalms and Proverbs are probably my favorite portion of the scripture. They are filled with wisdom, promises, and reminders of God’s faithfulness. One of the promises given in the Psalms is as follows:

Psalm 55:22 KJV
Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.

This verse tells us that God will take our burdens and carry us through our difficult seasons of life. There’s no problem too big for our God. We can always trust him to help us in our time of need.

Because God changes not, we can find very similar promises in the New Testament as well. First, directly from Jesus:

Matthew 11:28-30 KJV
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. [29] Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. [30] For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Did you catch the similarity? Both in the Psalm and in Matthew we are told to take our heavy burdens and give them to God. Jesus goes as step further and promises us rest.

The first verse I ever memorized from scripture (aside from John 3:16) is another similar promise to our scripture from Psalms:

1 Peter 5:7 KJV
Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

Not only does God promises to sustain us and give us rest, He tells us He does those things because He cares for us. He loves me and you so much that He sent His son to die for our sins, so that we could have a more abundant life and the promise and hope of Heaven.

If He loves us that much, I think we are safe to give him our burdens, don’t you?
