Fulfilling the Promise
2 Samuel 23:5 KJV
Although my house be not so with God; yet he hath made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things, and sure: for this is all my salvation, and all my desire, although he make it not to grow.
In this verse, David references an everlasting covenant between him and God. This covenant was made in 2 Samuel 7:12-13:
And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever.
The question is how did God fulfill this? There is not currently a king ruling from Jerusalem, and David’s line was taken from the throne during the Babylonian captivity around 600 BC.
The answer is found in the book of Matthew. The beginning of the book of Matthew is the genealogy of Jesus. Verses 6-11 tell us not only was Jesus’ adoptive father, Joseph, related to King David, but had the kingdom continued in Israel, Joseph would have been the rightful king:

[6] And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias; [7] And Solomon begat Roboam; and Roboam begat Abia; and Abia begat Asa; [8] And Asa begat Josaphat; and Josaphat begat Joram; and Joram begat Ozias; [9] And Ozias begat Joatham; and Joatham begat Achaz; and Achaz begat Ezekias; [10] And Ezekias begat Manasses; and Manasses begat Amon; and Amon begat Josias; [11] And Josias begat Jechonias and his brethren, about the time they were carried away to Babylon:
Therefore, since Jesus was the first-born, he would have been the next in-line to the throne following his adoptive father, Joseph. Jesus is currently alive and well sitting at the right hand of God the Father (Acts 2:33); therefore we can say the promise to King David has been fulfilled. Through King David’s lineage, a kingdom was established forever, in Jesus Christ, and one day that kingdom will be on Earth for 1,000 years (Rev. 20:6).
Side Note: Jesus was also related to King David biologically through Mary’s bloodline, which is recorded in Luke Chapter 3.
